Jukola Relay started in clear weather at 11pm. It is still light which means the head lights won't be needed for navigating but rather for reading the map in thickets. Most orienteers wore a standard orienteering head light but some had gone for the light-weight LED illuminator. The deepest darkness falls on the second leg orienteers and on the beginning of the third leg. The Sun sets in Lapua on Saturday night at 11.36 and rises again on Sunday at 3.22am. Out of the 1368 teams registered for Jukola Relay 175 didn't end up participating.
