Due to a late spring,
Cartographer Heikki Hautala was able to start the mapping for Virkiä-Jukola
approximately a month later than originally planned. The first day of mapping
was April 28 due to which the map of Jukola will not be quite finished by early
June which is when members of the Jukola organising committee are to visit the
terrain. Hautala does, however, assure that he will be able to present 80% of
the map on June 10.
"The map is based on the
1994 FIN5 map which will be very interesting to update. The FIN5 map by
Cartographer Jukka Pohjonen is, after all, of very high quality. From an
orienteering perspective the terrain is challenging and there are plenty of
good options for control points. Some of last autumn's storm damage is yet to
be fixed which causes some dilemmas for describing the vegetation", says
Hautala. Event Secreatry Juha Nivukoski
has been giving finishing touches for one the Jukola training maps situated
immediately beside he competition centre where the hills are very typical for
the Virkiä-Jukola terrain. The training terrain and the competition terrain are
divided by Kahunmäentie road the North of which is dedicated for training while
the South side is out of bounds. The training map has been finished in June and
along with other training maps it is available at request from Event Secretary
Juha Nivukoski.
